I’ve worked at the same family restaurant for thirty-six years.<\/p>\n
I’m seventy-two now.<\/p>\n
Most people who come through our doors assume I’m just an old woman trying to stay busy after retirement.<\/p>\n
They see gray hair.<\/p>\n
A slower walk.<\/p>\n
Hands that ache after carrying trays all day.<\/p>\n
What they don’t see is experience.<\/p>\n
Thirty-six years of watching people.<\/p>\n
Thirty-six years of learning that when someone plans to steal, they almost always make one mistake.<\/p>\n
The dinner rush had finally started slowing down when she walked in.<\/p>\n
She looked to be in her mid-twenties.<\/p>\n
Designer handbag.<\/p>\n
Expensive sunglasses resting on top of perfectly styled hair.<\/p>\n
She didn’t smile when I greeted her.<\/p>\n
She looked me up and down before saying, “Can someone younger take my table?”<\/p>\n
I smiled politely.<\/p>\n
“I’m happy to help you.”<\/p>\n
She rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n
“I guess that’ll have to do.”<\/p>\n
I’d been called worse.<\/p>\n
She ordered the most expensive steak on the menu, lobster tail, two cocktails, dessert, and an appetizer.<\/p>\n
Every time I checked on her, she found something new to complain about.<\/p>\n
The steak was too hot.<\/p>\n
The water had too much ice.<\/p>\n
The music was too loud.<\/p>\n
At one point she snapped her fingers across the dining room.<\/p>\n
“Excuse me.”<\/p>\n
“I’ve been waiting almost thirty seconds.”<\/p>\n
Several customers looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
I apologized anyway.<\/p>\n
That’s part of the job.<\/p>\n
When I placed the bill on her table, the total came to $112.47.<\/p>\n
She glanced at it, laughed quietly, and stood up.<\/p>\n
“I’ll be right back,” she said.<\/p>\n
“I left something in my car.”<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
People did that all the time.<\/p>\n
Except instead of walking toward the entrance after reaching the lobby…<\/p>\n
She turned.<\/p>\n
Pushed through the side exit.<\/p>\n
And headed straight across the parking lot.<\/p>\n
One of the younger servers gasped.<\/p>\n
“She’s running.”<\/p>\n
The manager immediately started toward the door.<\/p>\n
I gently touched his arm.<\/p>\n
“Wait.”<\/p>\n
He looked confused.<\/p>\n
“Aren’t you going after her?”<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
“Give it two minutes.”<\/p>\n
She had no idea I’d watched people try this before.<\/p>\n
The side exit she used avoided the front cashier.<\/p>\n
Most people thought it also avoided the cameras.<\/p>\n
It didn’t.<\/p>\n
Years ago I’d suggested adding another camera after a similar incident.<\/p>\n
Management listened.<\/p>\n
The new camera covered exactly one section of the parking lot.<\/p>\n
The section almost everyone walked through after leaving that side door.<\/p>\n
As she reached a white SUV, she smiled.<\/p>\n
She probably thought she’d gotten away with it.<\/p>\n
Then she stopped.<\/p>\n
She searched through her purse.<\/p>\n
Checked her pockets.<\/p>\n
Walked around the vehicle.<\/p>\n
She’d forgotten something.<\/p>\n
Her phone.<\/p>\n
It was still sitting on the restaurant table.<\/p>\n
The same phone she’d used to photograph her food.<\/p>\n
The same phone that wasn’t locked.<\/p>\n
While she hurried back inside pretending she’d simply “forgotten” it, the manager had already reviewed the security footage.<\/p>\n
Not just from the parking lot.<\/p>\n
From inside the dining room too.<\/p>\n
The video clearly showed her looking around before deliberately choosing the side exit.<\/p>\n
She walked straight toward her table.<\/p>\n
The smile she’d worn outside was gone.<\/p>\n
“My phone,” she said casually.<\/p>\n
The manager picked it up.<\/p>\n
“Before I return this,” he said, “would you like to pay your bill?”<\/p>\n
Her face immediately changed.<\/p>\n
“I was coming back.”<\/p>\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n
“Interesting.”<\/p>\n
“Because the cameras show you walking directly to your vehicle.”<\/p>\n
She crossed her arms.<\/p>\n
“So?”<\/p>\n
“So your bill is still unpaid.”<\/p>\n
She laughed.<\/p>\n
“You’re seriously accusing me of stealing over a hundred dollars?”<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
“The cameras are.”<\/p>\n
For a moment, I thought she’d apologize.<\/p>\n
Instead, she looked directly at me.<\/p>\n
“This is your fault.”<\/p>\n
“If you weren’t so slow, I wouldn’t have left.”<\/p>\n
Several customers nearby actually laughed.<\/p>\n
One gentleman stood up.<\/p>\n
“No, sweetheart,” he said calmly.<\/p>\n
“Your behavior is your fault.”<\/p>\n
The restaurant had already called the police.<\/p>\n
They arrived less than ten minutes later.<\/p>\n
When the officers asked for her explanation, she repeated the same story.<\/p>\n
“I forgot my phone.”<\/p>\n
One officer asked a simple question.<\/p>\n
“If you forgot your phone…”<\/p>\n
“…why were your car keys already in your hand when you reached your SUV?”<\/p>\n
She didn’t answer.<\/p>\n
Security footage answered for her.<\/p>\n
She eventually paid the entire bill.<\/p>\n
Then the manager added the restaurant’s policy charge for attempted theft and informed her she would no longer be welcome there.<\/p>\n
As she was leaving, she glared at me.<\/p>\n
“This isn’t over.”<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
“It already is.”<\/p>\n
After she left, the young server asked how I’d known not to chase her.<\/p>\n
I laughed.<\/p>\n
“Because people planning to fool everyone usually spend so much time thinking about their escape…”<\/p>\n
“…they forget the smallest details.”<\/p>\n
In her case, it wasn’t the cameras that caught her.<\/p>\n
It wasn’t the police.<\/p>\n
It wasn’t even me.<\/p>\n
It was her own confidence.<\/p>\n
She believed an elderly waitress wouldn’t notice.<\/p>\n
What she didn’t understand was that after thirty-six years in the same restaurant, I’d learned something important.<\/p>\n
