Dishes were drying in the rack. The TV hummed quietly in the living room. The dog was asleep on the rug like he had absolutely no responsibilities in life.<\/p>\n

My wife had just finished her shower.<\/p>\n

She walked out of the bathroom and headed toward the bedroom completely naked, water still dripping from her hair onto the hardwood floor. She looked relaxed, glowing from the steam, humming like she always did after a long day.<\/p>\n

Then she paused at the bedroom doorway and glanced toward the window.<\/p>\n

\u201cBabe,\u201d she said casually, \u201cclose the curtains. I don\u2019t want the neighbors seeing me like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I leaned back on the couch, grinning.<\/p>\n

\u201cRelax,\u201d I said. \u201cIf they see you, they\u2019ll probably just get jealous.\u201d<\/p>\n

She rolled her eyes at me \u2014 that look that says you think you\u2019re funny, but you\u2019re not<\/em> \u2014 grabbed a towel, and disappeared into the bedroom.<\/p>\n

Still smirking, I stood up to close the curtains anyway.<\/p>\n

Our bedroom window faces the house next door. We\u2019ve lived there for six years and never once thought about it. The houses aren\u2019t that far apart, but there are trees, a fence, the usual suburban privacy buffer.<\/p>\n

As I reached the window, I casually pulled the curtain aside.<\/p>\n

Then she walked back into the room, now tightly wrapped in the towel.<\/p>\n

I rubbed the back of my neck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole family was in the kitchen. And they were definitely looking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes widened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re joking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I was.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a solid five seconds, we just stared at each other.<\/p>\n

Then something unexpected happened.<\/p>\n

She burst out laughing.<\/p>\n

Not a polite chuckle. Not a nervous giggle.<\/p>\n

Full, uncontrollable laughter.<\/p>\n

She had to sit down on the bed because she couldn\u2019t stay upright.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my God,\u201d she gasped between breaths. \u201cSix years. We\u2019ve lived next to them for six years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd tonight is the night they get a full view of me strolling through the house like it\u2019s a spa resort.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPretty much.\u201d<\/p>\n

I expected embarrassment. Maybe panic.<\/p>\n

Instead, she wiped tears from her eyes and said, \u201cWell\u2026 at least I\u2019ve been going to the gym.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning was worse.<\/p>\n

Because the universe has a sense of humor.<\/p>\n

I had to take the trash out.<\/p>\n

And of course, Mr. Carter was already outside watering his plants.<\/p>\n

He looked up and gave me a cheerful wave.<\/p>\n

\u201cMorning!\u201d he called.<\/p>\n

I forced a smile and waved back, praying he\u2019d leave it at that.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cNice weather for\u2026 open windows last night,\u201d he added with a grin that told me he absolutely knew what he was doing.<\/p>\n

My face went red instantly.<\/p>\n

When I came back inside, my wife was waiting in the kitchen, sipping coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey know,\u201d I said flatly.<\/p>\n

She groaned and covered her face.<\/p>\n

For the next few days, we perfected the art of strategic avoidance.<\/p>\n

If we heard their front door open, we closed ours.<\/p>\n

If their car pulled into the driveway, we suddenly had urgent indoor responsibilities.<\/p>\n

But then, the following weekend, we ran into Mrs. Carter while getting the mail.<\/p>\n

She smiled warmly at my wife.<\/p>\n

I stared at the mailbox like it held the secrets of the universe.<\/p>\n

When we walked back inside, she shut the door and leaned against it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d she said slowly, \u201cthat\u2019s one way to make an impression.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter ten years of marriage, we can still surprise the neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed and nudged me.<\/p>\n

And just like that, the embarrassment faded into something else \u2014 a private joke we now share whenever we forget to close the curtains.<\/p>\n

Marriage isn\u2019t always big anniversaries and grand gestures.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s just small, ridiculous moments that become stories you laugh about for years.<\/p>\n

And sometimes, it\u2019s knowing that even if the whole neighborhood accidentally gets a glimpse of your life\u2026<\/p>\n
